Departure

When Thomas got back into bed he couldn’t fall back to sleep again. He just lay there instead, staring at the ceiling, thinking of all the things he would need for his journey into the forest. ‘Food and drink are obviously the first items I’ll be needing, being the bare necessities and all,’ he thought. ’I wouldn’t get very far without those to sustain me. A compass would be helpful as well, to point me in the right direction so that I can navigate the way forward to my intended destination. The Book of Fables, of course, was an item I would need to bring with me also, although I’m still unsure how to use it exactly.

’I mean, I’m only operating on a theory after all that the book might be able to do something useful based on the strange voices and images from his bizarre dreams I’ve been having of late.

‘It’s risky but it might just be the answer to the riddle that’s plagued Mr Tinkler for all these years. Perhaps this power within me would diminish, then disappear altogether, once this Fables has been recaptured back inside the book.’

Thomas turned over on to his side for more comfort, dwelling on these thoughts for just a while longer, before thinking about what else he might need to take on his quest.

‘Another thing that might prove itself useful to me along the way will be the map of the Bavarian Forest that’s hung up on the wall of Mr Tinkler’s bedroom,’ he thought sensibly. ‘But if Mum’s locked the doors to the room after she and Herman Kohler inspected the broken window yesterday, then that might make the map a bit more difficult to obtain than I first thought.’

He was just trying to think of a suitable reason that Elsa would believe in order to allow him entry inside Hans’ bedroom (if indeed it was locked) to remove the map without evoking awkward questions from her – and even more awkward answers from himself – so that he could seize the map and take it for his own keeping.

‘I need it for… what exactly?’ he thought mockingly. ‘So that I can use it to venture into the forest as a navigational tool to track down a hideous evil being and bind him to a book for all time? Yeah, right. I can just see that going down a treat.’

No matter how long he puzzled over it, though, he couldn’t think of an appropriate excuse for gaining access to Hans’ master bedroom if needs be, nothing coming to mind that he thought would hoodwink his mother.

Completely stumped, he sat up in bed and leaned to the side to see what time it was. It was still fairly gloomy outside, but Thomas was able to read the face of the clock resting on his bedside table.

It read six thirty-eight a.m.

‘No better time to find out about the map than the present,’ he thought. ‘Mum would surely still be asleep at this hour.’

He
