Departure
When Thomas got back into bed he couldnât fall back to sleep again. He just lay there instead, staring at the ceiling, thinking of all the things he would need for his journey into the forest. âFood and drink are obviously the first items Iâll be needing, being the bare necessities and all,â he thought. âI wouldnât get very far without those to sustain me. A compass would be helpful as well, to point me in the right direction so that I can navigate the way forward to my intended destination. The Book of Fables, of course, was an item I would need to bring with me also, although Iâm still unsure how to use it exactly.
âI mean, Iâm only operating on a theory after all that the book might be able to do something useful based on the strange voices and images from his bizarre dreams Iâve been having of late.
âItâs risky but it might just be the answer to the riddle thatâs plagued Mr Tinkler for all these years. Perhaps this power within me would diminish, then disappear altogether, once this Fables has been recaptured back inside the book.â
Thomas turned over on to his side for more comfort, dwelling on these thoughts for just a while longer, before thinking about what else he might need to take on his quest.
âAnother thing that might prove itself useful to me along the way will be the map of the Bavarian Forest thatâs hung up on the wall of Mr Tinklerâs bedroom,â he thought sensibly. âBut if Mumâs locked the doors to the room after she and Herman Kohler inspected the broken window yesterday, then that might make the map a bit more difficult to obtain than I first thought.â
He was just trying to think of a suitable reason that Elsa would believe in order to allow him entry inside Hansâ bedroom (if indeed it was locked) to remove the map without evoking awkward questions from her â and even more awkward answers from himself â so that he could seize the map and take it for his own keeping.
âI need it for⦠what exactly?â he thought mockingly. âSo that I can use it to venture into the forest as a navigational tool to track down a hideous evil being and bind him to a book for all time? Yeah, right. I can just see that going down a treat.â
No matter how long he puzzled over it, though, he couldnât think of an appropriate excuse for gaining access to Hansâ master bedroom if needs be, nothing coming to mind that he thought would hoodwink his mother.
Completely stumped, he sat up in bed and leaned to the side to see what time it was. It was still fairly gloomy outside, but Thomas was able to read the face of the clock resting on his bedside table.
It read six thirty-eight a.m.
âNo better time to find out about the map than the present,â he thought. âMum would surely still be asleep at this hour.â
